LEWISBURG, Pa. – After winning a gold medal at the Patriot League Swimming & Diving Championships, Maddie Hartigan earned her second Bison Athlete of the Week nod of her freshman campaign.
Hartigan clocked a time of 16:44.99 to win the 1,650 freestyle, nearly five seconds faster than the second-place finisher and good for second in the Bucknell annals. She swam the first 1,000 in 10:06.57, also good for second in school history.
Hartigan was the fourth Bison to win the 1,650 freestyle at the Patriot League Championships, joining Linda Fink (1993), Daniela Faas (2002) and Kelly Pontecorvo (2013). She was also Bucknell's first individual Patriot League champion since 2016, when Emma Levendoski won both the 100 and 200 backstroke.
In addition, Hartigan was the runner-up in the 500 freestyle with a school-record time of 4:49.16 and took seventh in the 200 freestyle. She was a member of the third-place 800 freestyle relay team, which clocked a school-record time of 7:18.40, the fourth-place 400 freestyle relay and the sixth-place 200 freestyle relay.
Hartigan led all Bison with 49 points, tied for sixth among all swimmers. She was joined by Julie Byrne (8th, 47) and Maggie Wyngowski (t-9th, 45) in the top 10.
Hartigan was previously honored as the Bison Athlete of the Week on Nov. 19 after winning two events at the Bucknell Invitational. She also clocked four program top-10 times at that meet; notably, her time of 4:50.28 in the 500 freestyle was a fraction of a second slower than the school record (4:50.26) at the time. Byrne was later recognized as the Bison Athlete of the Week after winning a combined five events during the Bison's home duals against Loyola on Jan. 11 and Army West Point on Jan. 12.
Hartigan and the Bison return to action at the ECAC Championships this weekend in Annapolis, Md.
