Men's Swim & Dive Finishes Third at PL Championships

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's swimming & diving team placed third at the Patriot League Swimming & Diving Championships, which concluded on Saturday at Kinney Natatorium.
Behind six medal-winning performances, the Bison totaled 397 points, less than only service academies Navy (1,037.5) and Army West Point (781.50). They narrowly edged Boston University (376) and Lehigh (330) for third, aided by the 400 freestyle relay team of Matt McGoey, Liam Pitt, Jack Rogers and Charlie McFarland capturing bronze in the final event of the four-day championship meet.
The 400 freestyle relay team was one of three that placed third over the course of the event, joining the 200 and 400 medley relay teams both comprised of Jack Rose, Cummings, Pitt and McFarland. Cummings, McFarland and McGoey were Bucknell's individual standouts; Cummings (100 breaststroke) and McFarland (50 freestyle) both swam to runner-up finishes while McGoey (200 IM) earned a bronze medal.
On Saturday, Bucknell sent 11 swimmers to the finals, with Mitch Gavars (1,650 freestyle) and Nick Haddad (200 backstroke) finishing in the highest spot at sixth. Cummings added a seventh-place effort in the 200 breaststroke; during the preliminaries, he became the first ever Bison to clear 1:59, clocking in at 1:58.85.
McGoey won the 200 breaststroke's consolation finals with the sixth-fastest time (1:48.17) in the Bison annals. In total, the Bison logged seven top-10 times on the final day of the Patriot League Championships, including the third-fastest in the 400 freestyle relay.
This is the second-straight year the Bison placed third at the Patriot League Championships. They return to the pool next weekend when they compete at the ECAC Championships in Annapolis, Md.
