LEWISBURG, Pa. – All five Bucknell starters reached double-figures in scoring, led by Kyi English, who tallied a team-high 15 points on 7-of-7 shooting, as the Bison women's basketball team posted an 87-55 victory over Loyola (Md.) Wednesday evening at Sojka Pavilion. The Bison tied a program record with their 12th consecutive victory, reaching the total for the third consecutive season. Bucknell is now 22-4 overall and 13-1 in league play, remaining tied with American at the top of the conference standings.
Abby Kapp scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half, connecting on four 3-pointers. The Orange and Blue connected on 11 threes, bringing their season total to 214, which ties the program record set during the 2016-2017 season. Bucknell shot 63.2 percent (36-for-57) for the game, assisting on 23 of its made field goals. The Bison outrebounded the Greyhounds (4-21, 3-11 PL), 31-20, and converted 17 Loyola turnovers into 26 points.
"We told our players that we know Loyola is shorthanded because of injuries, but they're a team that's going to come out and play hard and they're well coached, so we have to be ready," Bucknell head coach Aaron Roussell said. "I thought we were and we moved the ball really well. Twenty-three assists says a lot about the way we played today."
Kaitlyn Slagus had 11 points, a season-high seven assists, and six rebounds in just 25 minutes of playing time. The senior has now reached 900 career rebounds, becoming just the third Bison player to reach that milestone, and leaving her just five shy of breaking Hope Foster's program record set in 2008. Ellie Mack added 12 points, four rebounds and three blocks, while Kate Walker had 10 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals. English, who finished a plus-32 for the game in 26 minutes of play, is now eight points shy of joining classmates Slagus and Walker in Bucknell's 1000-point club.
Taylor O'Brien had eight points and a career-high three assists off the bench, and Rachel Dumiak added a pair of threes, as the Bison bench outscored Loyola's, 25-3.
The Bison starters combined to shoot 65.9 percent (27-41), including a perfect 7-for-7 night from English. Mack and Slagus each shot 5-of-7 from the field. Slagus is now shooting 59.5 percent on the season, which ranks first in the Patriot League and 21st in the nation.
"I think there were probably five or six different defenses we saw out there tonight," Roussell said. "For us to be on top of our game and for our players to recognize that, efficiency is the first thing that comes today when talking about how we played."
Loyola received 15 points apiece from Delaney Connolly and Bri Betz-White, while Hanna Niles scored 11. Stephanie Karcz had seven points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals.
Bucknell is on the road for its next game as it travels to Worcester, Massachusetts, for a game against Holy Cross on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Crusaders are 15-10 overall and 7-7 in the Patriot League after a 60-53 loss at Army West Point on Wednesday.
