6-LEWISBURG, Pa. – The No. 15 Bucknell University men's water polo team took a commanding win over La Salle in its return to MAWPC play and Kinney Natatorium on Saturday night.
Bucknell improves to 16-7 overall (7-1 MAWPC), while La Salle falls to 6-19 (1-10 MAWPC).
Bucknell once again used a fast start in its return to Kinney Natatorium, starting the game with seven unanswered goals. Jared Stanley started the proceedings with two straight tallies in quick succession on assists from Andu Vlasceanu and Rade Joksimovic. Vlasceanu and Schofield then each added goals just seconds later, before Joksimovic scored two more goals to cap a 7-0 first period in which Bucknell also hit the post twice. Joksimovic scored one from close range, and also converted a nice lob over the La Salle goalkeeper after being set free on a long pass from the back.
Cooper Dolan opened the second period with a goal, before goals by Schofield and Vlasceanu helped Bucknell extend its lead to 10-0. La Salle finally stopped the Bucknell run at the 5:06 mark of the second period. Bucknell emptied its bench midway through the second period, and Colby Paine capped off an 11-goal Bucknell half with a goal with just seconds remaining.
The Bison held firm in the second half of play, with Stanley assisting Vlasceanu on a nice crossing pass from the right side of the pool to a waiting Vlasceanu near the left corner of the goal as Bucknell scored its 12th just seconds into the period. Joksimovic scored a penalty shot as Bucknell shut out the Explorers in the third period en route to a 21-3 win. Jeff Brill and Kyle Poland each scored their first career goals in the fourth, with Poland finding the back of the cage on a nice pass in the center from the right side.
Stanley, Schofield, Joksimovic, and Vlasceanu each had three goals, while Poland and Fazekas each scored twice. Adrien Touzot and Jack Otto split time in the cage, combining for 11 saves. The 21 goals is the second-highest total for the team this season, and the three goals allowed are also the second lowest by the squad in 2019.
