Bucknell Finishes Fifth Overall
HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Bucknell University men's cross country team took fifth in Saturday's Patriot League Cross Country Championships led by a standout performance by senior Drew Dorflinger in his final Patriot League Championship race.
Results
Army won the meet for the third consecutive year with 37 points, placing four runners in the top ten en route to a narrow three-point edge over Navy, which was second with 40. Boston U (96), Lehigh (97), and Bucknell (105) rounded out the top half. Lafayette (174), Holy Cross (197), American (221), Colgate (267), and Loyola (Md.) (298) comprised the rest of the standings.
"Very mixed reviews on the men's side," said Head Coach Kevin Donner after the meet. "We were only nine points from third place, and we were set up beautifully by Drew and Jacob finishing second and tenth, respectively. A few other veterans just struggled and we were not able to capitalize on our top two."
Dorflinger, who finished as the runner-up to Navy's Jake Brophy, earned First Team Honors after missing the 2018 meet due to injury. Dorflinger came back his senior year and improved exponentially from his 17th-place finish in 2017.
Dorflinger becomes the fourth All-Patriot League First Team selection for the Bison since 2014, joining Will Bordash (7th, 2017), Andrew Garcia-Garrison (3rd, 2014), and Michael McGowan (2nd, 2014). Dorflinger's finish is also the highest for a Bison runner since McGowan's runner-up effort in 2014.
The senior from Pleasantville, N.Y. crossed the line in 25:03 to take second in the field of 106. Dorflinger moved up five places from the tenth spot at the 2430-meter mark, eventually working his way up to second at the 7065-meter mark of the 8k race.
"Drew looked as good as I have ever seen him," added Donner. "He beat some great runners today. He might have an outside shot at NCAA if he runs like that again in 13 days."
Joining Dorflinger in earning All-Patriot League laurels was senior Jake Stupak, who took tenth (25:41.5) after finishing 13th a year ago to earn Second-Team accolades for the second consecutive season.
"I'm very proud of Jake," said Donner. "He put himself in the mix and ran very tough."
Sophomore Brendan O'Toole (31st, 26:33) was next up for the Bison, followed by freshman Greg Eisenhower (35th, 26:41.9), and senior Brendan McGill (40th, 26:54.4) to round out Bucknell's scoring runners.
Evan Minor (41st, 26:54.8), Noah Martin (48th, 27:05.4), Brian Dengler (52nd, 27:11.5), Riley Gardner (27:13.7), Connor McMenamin (67th, 27:36.1), Terryl Ferrell (74th, 27:49.3), and Samuel Whittaker (77th, 27:54.6) all competed for Bucknell on the day.
Brophy, who won the race by 18 seconds, beat out both Dorflinger and defending champion and teammate Kevin Murray for the individual title. Army's Benjamin Petrella and Robert Santoyo rounded out the top five.
The Bison will now turn their attention to the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships hosted by Lehigh on Saturday, Nov. 15.
