BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Drew Dorflinger continued his excellent senior campaign in cross country by earning All-Region honors in taking 12th at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Meet on Friday afternoon.
Dorflinger earns his first All-Region honor, and Bucknell's first All-Region selection since Will Bordash earned the honor on Nov. 11, 2016, and just the third since 2012.
The Bison, which entered the meet ranked 12th, fared two spots better in taking 10th overall.
Dorflinger, who finished runner-up at the Patriot League Championships, earned Bucknell's highest finish since Matt Forys took fifth at the Mid-Atlantic Regional back on Nov. 15, 2006. Dorflinger was the second-highest Patriot League competitor behind Patriot League Champion Jake Brophy of Navy, who took second on Friday. At the moment, Dorflinger is on the outside looking in as far as qualifying for the NCAA Championship, but he could potentially still qualify if Princeton earns an at-large bid for finishing third overall.
"Getting back in the top ten was important to us," said Head Coach Kevin Donner. "We ran much better than we ran at the Patriot League Championships two weeks ago. I was happy that our men bounced back well and finished two spots higher than our seed. They handled the 10K very well. Dorflinger was outstanding and finished 12th to earn All-Region. He has gotten better every week and considering he missed last cross country season due to injury, he is peaking well. He just missed making nationals as an individual by once place, unless Princeton gets in as an at-large bid for finishing third as a team, then he would be competing."
The senior from Pleasantville, N.Y., stayed in the 13th spot from 7200 meters to the final 2K, eventually moving up one spot past Villanova's Casey Comber, last year's regional champion, during the last stretch. Dorflinger improved from a 31st place showing in 2017 in helping Bucknell back to a top-ten regional finish after taking 12th last season. The Bison have now finished in the top ten in five of the past six years.
Jake Stupak, who earned All-Second Team Patriot League at the League Championships, was Bucknell's next runner (36th, 31:11.9). Stupak also improved from his last showing at the Mid-Atlantic Regional, moving up 40 spots after taking 76th a season ago.
Connor McMenamin (61st, 32:00.8), Brendan O'Toole (78th, 32:20.1), and Evan Minor (86th, 32:23.1) rounded out Bucknell's scorers.Brendan McGill (92nd, 32:31.5) and Samuel Whittaker (162nd, 34:57.4) also competed.
The Bison finished two spots behind Navy, and two ahead of Lehigh. Lafayette (17th), American (21st), and Loyola (Md.) also competed.
No. 24 Villanova won the meet with 37 points, distancing itself from runner-up and No. 30 Georgetown (67) by 30 points. Princeton (82), Temple (100), and Penn (148) rounded out the top five.
Camren Fischer of Princeton won the meet (29:58.8), and was the only competitor to break 30 minutes on the 10K course. Brophy was second, followed by Josh Phillips and Haftu Strintzos of Villanova, and Nicholas Wareham of Georgetown to round out the top five.
