AMES, Iowa – Zach Hartman upset a nationally ranked opponent, but the Bucknell wrestling team was dispatched by No. 12 Iowa State, 24-15, on Sunday at the Hilton Coliseum.
Hartman used a last-second takedown to edge No. 20 Chase Straw, the defending Big 12 champion, in his second career bout at 165 pounds. In addition, Drew Phipps (197) stretched his dual winning streak to 14 bouts while freshman Darren Miller (133) earned his first career dual victory.
Nate Feyrer (285) picked up six points for the Bison (0-2, 0-0 EIWA) when No. 16 Gannon Gremmel was disqualified during the first period of their match; Gremmel was disqualified for taking two unsportsmanlike conduct calls.
Five nationally ranked Cyclones won their bouts to help their team win their 2019-20 opener. Iowa State (1-0, 0-0 Big 12) netted bonus points three times with a pin at 174 pounds, a technical fall at 157 pounds and a major decision at 149 pounds. All-American Jarrett Degen accounted for the major decision.
Trailing 3-0 entering the third period, Hartman got on the board with a penalty and an escape. Then, with just nine seconds on the clock, he scored a takedown to emerge a 4-3 victor. It was Hartman's sixth career win over a nationally ranked opponent and first at 165 pounds; the previous five came at 157 pounds.
