Earns MAWPC Tournament No. 1 Seed for Fourth Straight Year
BRONX, N.Y.—The No. 15 Bucknell men's water polo team downed No. 16 Fordham 9-6 to earn the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Tournament No. 1 seed for the fourth straight season, and avenge a 17-15 loss to the Rams in Lewisburg earlier this year.
Bucknell improves to 19-8 overall and has now won 10 games in MAWPC play in each of the past three years.
The Bison used goals from just three different players, but a solid defensive effort from the Bison helped limit the high-scoring Rams to just six goals in the win.
Bucknell jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first, thanks two goals from Andu Vlasceanu and a goal from Rade Joksimovic. Vlasceanu's first goal came just under a minute into the game at the 7:04 mark, before he added his second with 1:30 left in the period. Joksimovic added his first goal of the day with 46 seconds left as Bucknell took a 3-1 lead after one.
Bucknell stretched its lead to 5-1 in the second after Logan Schofield scored at the 6:26 mark before Joksimovic scored on a penalty shot. The Bucknell defense limited the Rams to just one goal in the second as it entered the break with a 5-2 lead.
Bucknell took control in the third, after goals from Schofield and Joksimovic stretched Bucknell's lead to its largest of the day, 7-2.
Fordham cut the lead to 8-4 with 6:11 left to go in the fourth, but a goal from Vlasceanu put Bucknell back in control with 5:48 remaining as the Bison clinched the top seed in the upcoming MAWPC Championships in Lewisburg from Nov. 22-24.
Joksimovic led the way with four goals, while Vlasceanu added three. Logan Schofield added two goals.
Bucknell will await the conclusion of other contests over the weekend to find out its first-round opponent on Friday, Nov. 22.
