LEWISBURG, Pa. – The No. 13 Bucknell University men's water polo team, the number one seed in the MAWPC Tournament, clamped down defensively in the fourth quarter, using a 3-0 run to hold off eighth-seeded La Salle 13-10 in the first round of the MAWPC Tournament on Friday afternoon.
The Bison, who improve to 20-8 this season overall, earned their third 20-win season in the last four seasons in the process under Head Coach John McBride.
The two teams were deadlocked at three in the opening minutes of the first period, with Rade Joksimovic scoring Bucknell's third on a penalty shot goal drawn by Logan Schofield. A long pass from goalkeeper Adrien Touzot to Joksimovic helped break a 6-6 tie with just seconds left on the clock to give Bucknell a 7-6 lead at halftime.
Bucknell took a 9-7 lead in the third on another goal by Joksimovic assisted by Cooper Dolan, before two straight goals from the Explorers tied things back up at nine. Jared Stanley assisted Bucknell's final goal of the third period before Domotor equalized to end the third as the two teams were tied, 10-10, heading into the fourth.
The Bison held strong in the fourth period. Two quick goals by Joksimovic and Dolan helped Bucknell take a 12-10 lead, before Stanley capped off Bucknell's scoring just a few minutes later.
