LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell volleyball took third-place Navy to four sets Tuesday evening and seemed to grow stronger as the match evolved, but eventually fell to the Midshipmen 3-1 (25-17, 28-18, 23-25, 25-20) in Davis Gym. With the loss, the Bison drop to 14-13 on the season.
The Bison finished the night with a hitting percentage above .250 for an eighth time this season, mostly helped by a big showing in the third set that the Bison won to keep the match alive. The Bison looked like they may come back again in the fourth after a 7-2 run brought them within three of the lead, but the Mids won the fourth following a pair of Bucknell attack errors.
The Bison had a tough time handling Navy's serves, as 14 times they scored on service aces. Three of those aces came in the first set, where Navy's 25-17 win was the largest of the evening. The Mids scored on three more aces in the second, and four times they strung together 3-0 runs to defeat Bucknell 25-18 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
After Bucknell took a 12-10 lead in the third, neither team grew the deficit beyond one until a 3-0 run by the Bison made it 21-19. Navy came back to tie it once more, but the Bison pulled out the win with back-to-back kills by Sophie Bullard and Lisa Zoch.
In the fourth, the Mids scored seven straight points to take a 7-1 lead. Bucknell got behind by as much as 11, but continued to battle back in the set. Although the Bison scored seven of the final 11 points to get as close as four, the Mids were able to close it out and collect the victory.
Zoch led the Bison with 13 kills and 16 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Bullard finished with 11 kills and a .300 hitting percentage. Emma Buchanan had perhaps the best outing of the Bison, posting nine kills and three block assists while securing a .692 hitting percentage, and freshman Kelsey O'Loughlin totaled 41 assists and 15 digs.
Bucknell concludes its season on Saturday, Nov. 16 with a home match against the Colgate Raiders. Saturday is also Senior Day for the Bison, and five seniors will be recognized for their Bucknell careers.
