LEWISBURG, Pa. – Late runs in the second and third sets by the Bison brought them close to extending the match, but first-place American held on to win 3-0 (25-11, 25-21, 25-18) in Davis Gym Friday evening. With the loss, Bucknell goes to 13-10 on the season, while American improves to 17-7.
The Eagles were out of the gates in a hurry, jumping out a 13-4 lead that included a 6-0 run. The Bison would put together a 3-0 run of their own to cut the deficit, but the commanding lead was too much to overcome as American went on to win the first set with the help of six blocks.
Bucknell pulled ahead early in the second and kept things close throughout the duration of the set. The Bison trailed by just one at 9-8 before a 5-1 run by American created separation. Trailing 23-17, the Bison put together a 4-1 run that included three kills by Lisa Zoch to pull within three, but again the Eagles came out on top, 25-21.
American scored seven of the first eight points in the third set. However, Bucknell came back with a 4-0 run, its largest of the match, to pull within two. A 3-0 Bucknell run later in the set made the score 14-13, but the Bison were never able to capture the lead before the Eagles claimed the 25-18 victory to win the match.
Mimi Richards put together the most successful outing of the Bison, recording seven kills and a block assist while maintaining a .385 hitting percentage. Anna Carroll and Zoch also posted seven kills, and Carroll added a pair of block assists to go with a .278 hitting percentage. Emma Buchanan had a noteworthy outing with four kills, two block assists, and a .300 percentage.
The Bison are back in Davis Gym tomorrow for a 4 p.m. matchup with the Loyola Greyhounds. The Bison took the Greyhounds to five sets before falling to them earlier in the season. Three Bison posted double-digit kills in that match.
