LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell field hockey held Penn State scoreless through 46 minutes of Wednesday evening's game, but it was broken open with a trio of Nittany Lion goals in the final 14 minutes of play. With the loss, the Bison go to 8-8 on the season, while Penn State moves to 5-11.
Although there was no score through the first three quarters, Bucknell was tested early and often by Penn State's offense. The Nittany Lions outshot the Bison 5-1 in the first half and attempted the only penalty corner in the first 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, Bucknell's best scoring chance of the game came with six minutes left in the third when Leah Fogelsanger rattled off a shot with heavy traffic in front of Penn State's goal. However, a defensive save by Elena Vos preserved the 0-0 score as the game reached halftime.
The third quarter also saw no score, but the Nittany Lions ramped up the pressure. They attempted seven shots and had three opportunities on penalty corners. Goalkeeper Olivia Harris and the Bison defense did well against the attack, fighting off three consecutive corner attempts with seven minutes left in the quarter.
Penn State finally got on the board when Abby Myers caught a pass from the right end line and fired it past Harris to make it a 1-0 game with 14 minutes to play. 36 second later Penn State scored again with a Jemma Punch goal. The Nittany Lions would add one more in the final six minutes to put the game away.
Harris ended the evening with six saves on 17 Penn State shots, while Fogelsanger led the Bison in shots.
Bucknell will play one more regular season contest on Saturday when it hosts Holy Cross at Graham Field. With a win, the Bison will clinch a spot in the Patriot League tournament. Six seniors will also be recognized on Saturday for Senior Day. That game is scheduled for noon and will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
