RESULTS
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- It was a tough day for scoring, but the Bucknell women's golf team battled its way into contention Monday on the opening day of the Vanessa Picciotto Perrine Memorial Intercollegiate, hosted by Wagner at Richmond Country Club. The Bison sit in second place in a six-team field after opening with a 333 team score.
Monmouth has the lead after posting a 327, but Bucknell is only six strokes back. The Bison are 12 up on third-place Wagner (345), with Long Island (351), Fairfield (355) and Niagara (366) rounding out the field.
Only two players in the field managed to break 80 in difficult conditions on Monday. Practice rounds were canceled a day earlier due to rain, and then the players had to contend with a long course with fast, undulating greens.
Erin Holmes paced the Bison with an 81, which puts her in a tie for fourth place, just three shots behind leader Susan Leone of Niagara, who shot 78. Monmouth's Paige Diecidue (79) was the only other player in the 70s.
Sally Sohn is also in contention after opening with an 82, which puts her alone in ninth place. The Bison, who are without No. 1 player Casey Morrow due to injury, also counted a pair of 85s from Meredith Langs and Sahana Paravantavida. Tatum McKelvey added an 86.
The tournament concludes on Tuesday with a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start.
