LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman Luke Smith provided an outstanding performance on Senior Day, and has been named the Bison Athlete of the Week after helping Bucknell earn a crucial point in a 0-0 draw against Army on Saturday in a key Patriot League fixture.
The native of Devon, Pa. dove to his right to save a penalty by the Black Knights in the first half, along with two more big one-on-one saves in the second half, en route to a four-save performance, one short of his career best. The Black Knights had scored eight goals in their previous two games heading into the matchup.
The save from the spot was the second consecutive penalty save for Bucknell, after Emmett Witmer saved a late penalty against Binghamton on Tuesday.
Smith ranks third in the Patriot League in goals against average at 0.70, and has now earned three clean sheets this year. Smith is one of only four Patriot League goalkeepers with three or more shutouts this season.
After earning a shutout in his first collegiate start in a 3-0 win over Saint Francis (PA), Smith has gone on to start nine of Bucknell's next 11 games, giving up just eight goals in the process.
Overall, Smith has recorded a clean sheet in two straight appearances after helping Bucknell blank Boston University 3-0 on Oct. 20.
The Bison will play Cornell on Tuesday evening before traveling to Lafayette on Saturday, Nov. 2 for a 7 p.m. contest.
