CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – For their role in the Bucknell football team's 32-14 victory over defending champion Colgate, Simeon Page and Alex Pechin captured Patriot League weekly awards.
Page was voted as the Defensive Player of the Week while Pechin was tabbed as the Special Teams Player of the Week. In addition, Page received Honorable Mention FCS Defensive Player of the Week laurels from STATS and was selected as the Bison Athlete of the Week.
Page filled the stat sheet with six tackles, three sacks for a loss of 21 yards and a career-best two pass breakups. He returned a fumble for a 12-yard touchdown that put an exclamation mark on his team's win with 44 seconds remaining; in addition, he broke up a pass on 4th and goal late in the fourth quarter to give the Bison the opportunity to run down the clock.
Page cracked Bucknell's top-10 in career sacks during the contest; with 18.5 in just two and a half seasons of work, he is in sole possession of seventh place. With 1.5 more, he will become only the fifth Bison with at least 20 in his career.
Handling kicking duties for the first time since his sophomore year, Pechin booted two field goals in the second quarter to extend the Bison's advantage to 20-7. His first, a 38 yarder, came with 6:17 on the clock; he kicked his second, a 29 yarder, with 20 seconds remaining before the break. Bucknell's All-American punter also booted two extra points to match his career high of eight points set in the 2016 opener at Marist.
Pechin successfully faked a punt to extend a pivotal Bison drive. After the Raiders put together a scoring drive on their first possession of the third quarter to trim Bucknell's lead to 20-14, the Bison responded with a scoring drive of their own to go up 26-14. On a 4th and 1 at midfield, Pechin ran for 12 yards to keep the drive alive.Â
Pechin remained the FCS leader with a 49.1 punting average after averaging 46.8 yards on five punts at Colgate; he landed two inside the 20 and had two sail for at least 50 yards. He also averaged 56.3 yards on a career-high seven kickoffs.
Page was previously honored as the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week after recording eight tackles, six tackles for a loss of 33 yards, four sacks for a loss of 27 yards and one forced fumble in the red zone in the 2017 finale at Fordham; following that performance, he was also recognized by STATS as the National Freshman Player of the Week.
Pechin, a multi-time All-American and three-time All-Patriot League First Team honoree, was last named the Patriot League Special Teams as a freshman; he was honored for his performance in the 2015 finale at Colgate, in which he handled both kicking and punting duties.Â
A Bison was last recognized as the Patriot League Special Teams Player of the Week on Oct. 15, 2018 when Gerrit Van Itallie garnered the award after blocking two punts at Monmouth. Page's previous Defensive Player of the Week nod was the last time a Bison earned that award; during the 2017 campaign, Ben Richard (Sept. 25) and Colin Jonov (Oct. 23) were also tabbed as the Defensive Player of the Week. Page was also a two-time Rookie of the Week (Sept. 4 and Nov. 20) that season.Â
Page is the second football player to be named the Bison Athlete of the Week this season, joining Brandon Sanders. Sanders was honored last week (Oct. 7) after breaking a 55-year-old school record with 14 receptions against Holy Cross. Page was previously tabbed as the Bison Athlete of the Week following his 2017 performance at Fordham.
Page, Pechin and the Bison return to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. by facing off against No. 20/18 Towson in their final non-conference game of the season.
