SPRINGFIELD, Va. – The No. 15 Bucknell University men's water polo team earned a big MAWPC win against No. 14 George Washington on Sunday afternoon in a neutral venue at the St. James in Springfield, Va. The Bison used an 8-1 start out of the gate to run past the Colonials in a rematch of last season's MAWPC Championship game.
Bucknell improves to 12-2 this season, and is on a six-game winning streak after earning two wins over Johns Hopkins and Navy one day prior.
Bucknell used a fast start, a common trend for the Bison this season, to score eight times in the first period. Logan Schofield started the proceedings when he found the back of the cage on an assist by Andu Vlasceanu. Rade Joksimovic then scored an unassisted tally as Bucknell took a 2-0 lead. GW answered with a goal by Chris Lee shortly afterward, but the Bison scored five straight to end the period and take a commanding 8-1 lead over the 14th-ranked Colonials.
Jared Stanley extended the Bucknell lead to 9-1 after he scored one of his season-best four goals on the day on another Vlasceanu assist before GW got its second goal on the board. The one goal by Stanley was all Bucknell managed in the second period, but the Bison defensively limited the Colonials to just two tallies the rest of the half as it went into the break with a 9-3 lead.
GW opened the scoring in the second half on a goal by Chris Lee, but Bucknell responded after Jack Lewis drew an exclusion and a penalty shot that Joksimovic promptly converted. Stanley tallied one more goal while Schofield scored the lone Bison goal in the fourth period as the Bison cruised to a five-goal win, the most by the Bison over the Colonials since an 11-5 win in 2016.
Joksimovic led the way with three goals and two assists, while Stanley scored a season-high four goals. Vlasceanu and Cooper Dolan each tallied three assists. Freshman goalkeeper Adrien Touzot had another solid game in the cage, saving 17 shots for a .680 save percentage.
Bucknell will now look ahead to four games at the Harvard Invite on Oct. 19-20.
