Men's Tennis Advances Two in Singles Brackets, Sends Doubles Tandem to Championship Round

RICHMOND, Va. - Bucknell men's tennis advanced two in singles and will be competing for a doubles championship tomorrow after completing the first day of the River City Tennis Open Friday.
Sophomore Ryan Jurist and junior Marwan Abaza will represent the Bison in the F doubles championship round on Saturday after defeating two other tandems on the first day. The duo picked up a 7-5 win over a pair from Appalachian State in the opening round, then defeated partners from Charlotte 6-3 in the semis. Jurist and Abaza will now take on Luke Maxwell and Chanasorn Nakaurai of George Mason for a shot at the doubles title.
Abaza, who is seeing his first action of the fall this weekend, also earned a singles victory playing in the F flight. Abaza defeated Appalachian State's Karan Srivastava 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinal round. Abaza will face Momin Khan of George Mason tomorrow.
Also picking up a singles win was freshman Guillermo Torres. Torres defeated his Appalachian State opponent 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the G singles quarterfinal. Torres faces Faisel Alredi of George Mason tomorrow.
Torres also picked up a 7-5 win playing alongside Per Astrom in F doubles, but the pair was defeated during the semifinal round. Astrom and Ryan Jurist will each compete in singles consolation brackets tomorrow.
Play continues at the River City Tennis Open Saturday morning with the singles quarterfinal and semifinal rounds.
