PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown edged the Bucknell wrestling team, 20-18, on Saturday evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The Bears (4-2, 2-1 EIWA) erased a 15-3 deficit by winning four of the final five bouts to hand the Bison (3-6, 1-3 EIWA) a heartbreaking loss. Bucknell, which scored a commanding 35-3 victory at Harvard earlier in the day, raced out to its early advantage against Brown in large part due to Joey Gould's pin of Colin Realbuto at 141 pounds.
For the second-straight dual, the Campbell twins gave the Bison an early spark. After Jakob Campbell (125) topped Trey Keeley by a 2-0 decision to move to 6-0 in dual action, David Campbell (133) edged Reese Fry, 9-6, behind a third-period takedown.
Gould then picked up his first pin of the 2018-19 campaign, bringing Realbuto's shoulders to the mat with less than 10 seconds remaining in the third period. With his team trailing 12-0, Samuel Lynch (149) got the Bears on the board in dramatic fashion; he posted a takedown and four back points in the final 10 seconds to walk away a 12-11 victor over Matthew Kolonia.
Needing bonus points after Zach Hartman's 7-2 decision over Christian LaBrie at 157 pounds pushed the Bison's lead to 15-3, Brown scored back-to-back major decisions to trim its deficit to 15-11. After a tight 3-1 decision by C.J. LaFragola (184) made it a one-point match, Drew Phipps came up big for Bucknell. In their 197-pound bout, Phipps dropped Nino Bastianelli, 5-2, bolstered by a 4-0 opening period.
Phipp's victory pushed the Bison's edge up to 18-14. But, in his heavyweight bout with Ian Butterbrodt, Brandon Stokes was disqualified in the middle of the third period after being hit with his fifth stall warning. Stokes's disqualification netted the Bears six points, resulting in the 20-18 final.
Hartman, a freshman ranked eighth by both Intermat and The Open Mat, improved to 16-4 on the season with his decision over LaBrie, which includes an unbeaten 12-0 mark against unranked grapplers. Earlier in the day against the Crimson, Hartman won by fall for the fifth time.
Freshman Jacob Ferreira made his dual debut for Bucknell, ceding the 3-1 decision to LaFragola, a two-time NCAA qualifier.
The Bison next travel to Sacred Heart (12 p.m.) and Hofstra (7 p.m.) for their second-straight EIWA doubleheader on Jan. 26.
