CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Reed Malas represented the Bucknell men's lacrosse team on the 2019 Preseason All-Patriot League Team, the league office announced Wednesday.
The senior captain, a 2018 All-Patriot League Second Team selection, was among 16 student-athletes voted to the preseason all-league team. He enjoyed a breakout junior year in 2018, finishing fourth on the team with 34 points (22g-12a) while starting all 15 games on the top midfield line. He enters his senior campaign with 64 points (40g-24a) in 41 career games, including 28 starts over the past two seasons.
In addition, the Bison were selected to finish sixth in the Patriot League based on a vote by the league's head coaches and sports information directors. Loyola, Lehigh and Navy were tabbed as the top-three teams, with the Greyhounds receiving 16 of 18 first-place votes.
Bucknell opens its 2019 campaign on Saturday, Feb. 2 at Maryland and takes on Bryant in its home opener on Sunday, Feb. 10. In 2018, the Bison finished 11-4 overall and captured a share of the Patriot League regular-season title by going 7-1 in conference action. They reached the double digits in victories for the sixth time in Frank Fedorjaka's tenure as head coach and most notably knocked off eventual national champion Yale (9-8 OT) and then No. 6 Loyola (12-11) on the road. They rose as high as 10th in both the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Coaches' Poll and Inside Lacrosse Maverik Media Listing, their best national ranking since the 2013 campaign.
Malas and goalie Christian Klipstein, a 2017 and 2016 All-Patriot League Second Team honoree, are Bucknell's returning All-Patriot League picks. The Bison graduated five of their six 2018 All-Patriot League selections, including All-Americans Will Sands and Sean O'Brien. Sands graduated as Bucknell's record holder in career assists (141) and single-season assists (55, 2018) as well as second all-time in career points (243).
