The Mountain Hawks Opened the Game 0-15 From the Field
LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's basketball team held Lehigh without a made field goal in the first quarter, outscoring the Mountain Hawks 14-3, on its way to a 71-53 victory. The Bison improved their record to 13-4 overall and are now 4-1 against Patriot League opponents, while Lehigh is now 11-5 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
The Orange and Blue scored the first nine points of the contest, with the Mountain Hawks' first points coming on a pair of free throws by Gena Grundhoffer with 5:04 left in the first quarter. Bucknell's defense forced 15 straight missed field goals from Lehigh to start the game, covering a stretch of 11 minutes, 13 seconds. The Bison took a 35-21 lead into halftime, led by Kate Walker, who scored all 14 of her points in the first half.
"I was really proud with the way we started the game," Bucknell head coach Aaron Roussell said. "We came out focused and ready to play after two really good practices this week."
Lehigh cut the Bucknell lead to nine, 43-34, with 2:51 left in the third quarter, but the Bison responded with a three-point play by Kaitlyn Slagus, five straight points from Taylor O'Brien and a Slagus 3-pointer, rattling off 11 points in 90 seconds to build the lead back up to 20, 54-34. The Bison never led by less than 15 points for the remainder of the contest.
Slagus achieved game-highs of 18 points and 13 rebounds, while also blocking a pair of shots. It was her fourth double-double of the season and 29th of her career. O'Brien joined Slagus and Walker in double figures, scoring 11 points, the second straight game she has reached double figures. Marly Walls added a game- and career-high six assists, two points and a pair of steals, while Ellie Mack, Kyi English and Tessa Brugler each scored six points.
Camryn Buhr led the Mountain Hawks with nine points, while Cameryn Benz had eight points and eight rebounds.
The Bison forced 17 turnovers and held Lehigh to 30 percent (18-60) shooting, including a 2-of-16 (13%) mark from beyond the arc. English, Walls, and Abby Kapp had two steals apiece, while the team finished with 12.
"I thought the story of the game was our defense. That's a talented team and a really good shooting team," Roussell said. "Holding them to 0-of-14 shooting in the first quarter is an impressive stat. We know they may hit some of those shots in future games, but I think we were maybe able to get them to play at a little faster pace than they wanted to tonight."
The defensive effort has been strong in each of Bucknell's last three games as it posted wins over Army West Point, Lafayette, and Lehigh while allowing an average of 50.7 points per game.
Bucknell makes the trip to Hamilton. New York, to take on Colgate on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Raiders are off to a surprising start in league play after improving to 7-8 overall and 3-2 in the conference with an impressive 81-72 win over first-place Boston University on Wednesday.
Colgate's win shook up the Patriot League standings. Bucknell, American, and Boston University are now in a three-way tie for first place at 4-1 with 13 games remaining.
