LEWISBURG, Pa. – For her role in the Bucknell women's swimming & diving team's 2-0 weekend, Julie Byrne was selected as the Bison Athlete of the Week.
The senior captured her first Bison Athlete of the Week nod after winning a combined five events during the Bison's home duals against Loyola on Jan. 11 and Army West Point on Jan. 12. Byrne, who won the 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke against the Greyhounds, touched the wall first in the 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke and 200 IM against the Black Knights.
With their win over the Black Knights, the 2018 Patriot League runners-up, the Bison matched their highest total of dual wins in the past five seasons. They last reached the seven-victory plateau in 2014-15, when they finished the year 7-4 (4-3 Patriot League). Their five Patriot League victories represent their highest total since 2013-14, when they went an unblemished 6-0 in league action.
Byrne is the second women's swimmer to be recognized as the Bison Athlete of the Week in 2018-19. Maddie Hartigan was previously honored on Nov. 19 after winning two events at the Bucknell Invitational. The freshman also clocked four program top-10 times at that meet; notably, her time of 4:50.28 in the 500 freestyle was a fraction of a second slower than the school record (4:50.26).Â
Byrne and the Bison return to action on Sunday, Jan. 20 at 1 p.m. when they face Wagner at Columbia's Percy Uris Natatorium.
