Men's Soccer Finishes in Scoreless Draw with Canisius in Home Opener

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- A game that featured a combined 42 shot attempts and plenty of end-to-end action somehow did not include a goal, as Bucknell and Canisius played to a 0-0 tie on Friday night at Emmitt Field in the 2018 home opener for the Bison. Bucknell is now 1-1-1 with two shutouts this season while the Golden Griffins, the preseason favorites in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, are 1-2-1.
Both teams had golden opportunities to end the match either late in regulation or in overtime. Bison goalkeeper Ryan Ott came up big with a diving save to his right on a deflected shot in the 88th minute to keep the game scoreless. With three minutes left in the first overtime period, Bucknell inadvertently passed the ball to a defender who was on the ground with a leg cramp, and that allowed Filippo Tamburini to walk in all alone, but he pushed his shot wide of the right post.
At the other end, Bucknell's Kevin Gulizio, who had just subbed on for his injured teammate, took a pass back from Matt Thorsheim in the middle of the box and fired just wide of the left post with only 20 seconds to go in the first overtime session. Bucknell took six shots after the OT break, including a point-blank header from Tyler Peterson that required a fantastic kick save from Canisius keeper Bryce Tramuta (six saves).Â
Perhaps Ott's best save of the night came on Tamburini in the 55th minute, when the Bison netminder came out to deny the Golden Griffin attacker on a semi-breakaway opportunity. Tamburini had a game-high seven shots on the night.Â
Bernie Wright, who was a menace all night on both the left and right flanks, posted three shots for the Bison, tying Nick King and Matt Thorsheim for game-high honors. Bucknell's first good look of the night game just six minutes in, when Wright outmuscled a Canisius defender to win a ball back in the left corner. Wright slotted a pass across to Thorsheim, but his redirect went just over the bar.Â
The physical affair also included 38 combined fouls. Canisius was whistled for 20 of them, five of which resulted in yellow cards.
Canisius finished with a 22-20 shot advantage, while both teams had five corner kicks.Â
The Bison have a short turnaround, with Stetson coming to Emmitt Field for a noon start on Sunday. The contest will air on the Patriot League Network at PatriotLeague.tv.Â
