PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – A brace from Drexel midfielder Mathias Ebbesen on either side of halftime lifted the Dragons to a 2-0 home victory over Bucknell in a nonconference matchup on Tuesday evening.
The Bison, coming off of four consecutive overtime games, finally finished a game in regulation, but were undone by two crosses from wide positions being redirected by Ebbesen.
The Bison controlled the majority of the possession for the opening 15 minutes, but neither team could manage a shot until Trevor Wiggins lofted his header over the goal on a corner kick from Matt Thorsheim 18 minutes in.
Bucknell's next major scoring opportunity came just over ten minutes later, when Nick King found a nice opening at the top of the 18. King took a quick look up and curled his shot just wide of the far post.
The two teams exchanged quality chances just one minute apart 31 minutes in. After a goalmouth scramble, Ryan Ott made himself big and used his left arm to deflect a one-on-one opportunity from a Drexel attacker from point blank range.
The Bison's chance just a minute later came when Jacob Mittman forced a diving save from Drexel goalkeeper Stephen Kopsachilis on a low driven shot from the right side of the 18.
The Dragons scored on their second shot on target after a deflected cross bounced around the penalty area before falling kindly to Ebbesen, who bounced a low half-volley into the left side of the Bison goal with just 39 seconds to play in the first half.
The Dragons doubled their lead a little over 20 minutes into the second period when Ebbesen nodded home a header on a driven corner kick by Francisco Rodrigues da Palma.
Wiggins forced one last save from Kopsachilis in the 88th minute, but the Bison couldn't manage to find a goal to get back into the game in the second half.
The Bison held a 9-6 advantage in shots, while Drexel held a 6-3 edge on corner kicks. Ott finished with three saves in net for Bucknell.
"Like I said to the guys after the game, goals change games." said Head Coach Brendan Nash after the game. "We were playing pretty well in the first half, and then we made three or four fundamental mistakes that led to a goal with less than a minute left in the half. You can't make mistakes against good teams or they will cost you. Now we have to go back to work and get ready for league play."
Patriot League play begins this Saturday at home against Lafayette at 3 p.m., followed by a nonconference tilt next Tuesday at Penn beginning at 7 p.m.
