LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell men's soccer team played a fourth consecutive overtime game on Saturday when it finished in a 1-1 draw with Saint Peter's in a non-league game at Emmitt Field. The Bison trailed 1-0 in the 68th minute, when Tyler Peterson converted a penalty kick after Kevin Gulizio was taken down in the box while chasing down a rebound.Â
Now 2-2-2 on the season, Bucknell has played a total of 65 overtime minutes in the last four games, all coming on a four-game homestand, which adds up to a little more than two-thirds of a full extra match. The Bison are 1-1-2 in that stretch, including a win over Robert Morris on Wednesday leading into the draw with the Peacocks (2-4-1). The school record for consecutive overtime games is five, set in 2008.Â
Saint Peter's controlled the first half hour of the game and took a 1-0 lead on a perfectly placed shot by Marco Torino from the right edge of the box inside the far post.Â
Bucknell could not muster a shot until 8:30 remained in the half, but it was the second unit that delivered a big spark and helped level the field. Freshman Jacob Mittman brought in energy along the right flank. His foray into the area set up the first scoring opportunity of the day, but goalkeeper Jason Dubrovich turned aside a shot from Cody Wax. Another freshman, Michael Pavick, nearly equalized just 90 seconds into the second half. Pavick beat Dubrovich with a shot from the right side of the area, but defender Steven Parry was stationed on the goal line to keep the ball out.Â
Bucknell finally drew even in the 68th minute. Another reserve, Daniel Hallowell, broke loose on the left side and forced a tough save from Dubrovich. The rebound took a high bounce in the middle of the box, and a leaping Gulizio was shoved from behind while trying to get a head on it. Peterson scored on a well-taken penalty to make it 1-1.Â
Hallowell led another rush down the left alley in the 75th minute but stuffed his shot just wide of the near post.Â
In the first overtime period, Stefan Gollisz went just wide after a good pass ahead from Gulizio, who made his first career start in this one. A few minutes later, Dubrovich charged off his line to block a shot from Mittman, who had gotten behind the back line.Â
Saint Peter's last good chance came late in the first overtime when Parry had a clean header on a corner kick, but it sailed wide of the left post.Â
"Each of the last four games that have gone into overtime have been almost the same story," said head coach Brendan Nash. "There were a lot of shots taken and the stats were pretty even in all of them. We are still a work in progress. Playing four overtime games in eight days has affected our legs, and now we have to take care of our bodies and get ready for a good Drexel team on the road on Tuesday."
Bucknell finished with a 16-14 shot advantage and led 6-4 in corner kicks. It was a physical game, with a combined 34 fouls and five yellow cards issued. Ryan Ott made two saves for the Bison, while Dubrovich had five for the Peacocks.Â
Next up for Bucknell is a non-league road game at Drexel on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Philadelphia.Â
