Bison Finish 2-1 at the Terrier Invitational
BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. – Bucknell split its final two matches at the St. Francis Brooklyn Terrier Invitational on Saturday, going 2-1 in a tournament for the second straight week. The Bison fell 3-0 to Cal State Fullerton in the morning, but bounced back with a 3-1 win over NJIT later in the day.
The Bison head back to Lewisburg with a 4-2 record on the season. They went 2-1 at the Bucknell Invitational last weekend, including another win over NJIT.
Cal State Fullerton went on to beat St. Francis Brooklyn and exited the event with a 6-1 record on the season. NJIT went 1-2 on the weekend and is 1-5 on the season.
Bridgette Holland and Mimi Richards were named to the All-Tournament Team. It was the second straight All-Tournament honor for Richards.
Up next for Bucknell are three matches at the Hartford Invitational on Sept. 8-9. The Bison will play Niagara and Hartford on Saturday, and Brown on Sunday.
Bucknell 3, NJIT 1 (21-25, 25-23, 25-18, 26-24)
Holland and Richards were nearly unstoppable at the net as Bucknell shrugged off a first-set loss to beat NJIT 3-1 in the second match of the day. Holland totaled 12 kills with a .417 hitting percentage and had seven total blocks, while Richards finished with eight kills on .375 hitting and also had seven total blocks.
The Bison gave the Highlanders fits at the net the entire match, finishing with 16 blocks. Freshman Jennie Burke had two solo blocks and three block assists, while Blake Buchholz and Anna Carroll contributed thee block assists apiece.
With NJIT threatening to force a fifth set, it was only fitting that Bucknell fended off the Highlanders with a block. Burke came through with a kill to put the Bison up 25-24, and the match was clinched with a block by Holland and Buchholz.
Bullard posted her second double-double of the season with 13 kills and 11 digs. Burke had nine kills, and Buchholz tallied seven.
