LEWISBURG, Pa. – This season, the Bucknell football team will team with Vs. Cancer to bring awareness to pediatric cancer and raise funds to support the cause. The Bison, who are the first collegiate football program at any level to team with Vs. Cancer, will celebrate their efforts during September 1's home opener against William & Mary. The game, scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., will also serve as Vs. Cancer's kick-off to childhood cancer awareness month.
In partnership with Vs. Cancer, the Bison have selected Geisinger Janet Weis Children's Hospital to receive 50 percent of donation proceeds. The other 50 percent will be used to fund ground-breaking brain tumor research efforts through the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. The team is well on its way to reaching its $20,000 fundraising goal thanks to the generous support of family and friends.
"We consider it a privilege to partner with Vs. Cancer," said head coach Joe Susan. "It seems that cancer has an impact on every family. This is true of my family and a number of the young men in our program's families. If we can receive support, it will benefit those who suffer from this disease. The people who fight cancer need every resource available to them to make suffering from this illness a thing of the past. We will do our part to support this special cause."
Bucknell football players and coaches will visit patients and their families at Janet Weis Children's Hospital on Monday, August 13 as part of their partnership with Vs. Cancer.
Robin Boettcher, Chief Executive officer of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, understands how vital these athletes are to our mission. "We applaud the efforts and generous spirit of the Bucknell football team. They are helping us provide life-changing support for local children fighting cancer and fund ground-breaking research into a cure. With the support of this incredible team, we're fighting for futures for these kids."
The football team is the second Bison program to partner with Vs. Cancer. Last year, the women's soccer team raised $8,111 for Janet Weis Children's Hospital and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation; the program will fundraise again in 2018.
Vs. Cancer was founded in 2012 by Chase Jones, a former collegiate baseball player at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill who was diagnosed with a brain tumor as a freshman. The support of his teammates during treatment was his largest source of strength during recovery. Vs. Cancer now works with athletic teams across the country who have joined the fight against childhood cancer. With the help of athletes, teams and communities nationwide, Vs. Cancer has raised over $4.2 million dollars since its inception and is now a signature fundraising campaign for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.
