The Bison will tour Berlin, Prague, and Vienna
LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bison are on their way to Europe! The Bucknell women's basketball team departed campus Friday afternoon, beginning the first leg of a 10-day trip that includes stops in Germany, Czech Republic, and Austria, as well as three games, including one against a team in Slovakia. The Bison will take an overnight flight to Berlin Friday evening.
NCAA rules permit college teams to take one foreign tour every four years. This will be the first overseas trip for the Bucknell women's basketball team and will include the two incoming freshmen as well as the two recently graduated seniors. The two recent graduates will not compete in games.
"This is something we have been working on making a reality since we got here six years ago," Bucknell head coach Aaron Roussell said. "Having taken a few foreign tours during my time at University of Chicago, I've seen the impact these trips have on our student-athletes and I'm thrilled that this group will get to have that experience.
"It's really more of an educational trip than it is about basketball. The opportunity to see different countries and a different way of life will be a highlight for these young women."
The team will land in Berlin on Saturday morning and will spend three days in the capital. The first game of the trip will be against Tusli Berlin on Monday.
"For me personally the trip to Berlin will be special as it is a trip back to my birthplace and an area with a lot of family history," Roussell said. "Additionally, only a few of our players have ever been to Europe and no one has been to the three cities we will be visiting, which adds to the thrill of the travels."
The team will take a bus to Prague, the capital city of Czech Republic, on Tuesday and will spend three days there. The Bison will play against Sparta Prague on Wednesday. Included on that portion of the trip is a boat tour of the Vltava River and a trip to the Prague Castle.
On Friday, the Bison head to Vienna, the capital city of Austria. There they will play their final game of the trip when they take on BK Samorin in Slovakia on Saturday. That part of the trip will include a tour of Schonbrunn Palace and a night at the Prater Amusement Park.
Finally, the Bison will wrap up their trip on Monday with a flight out of Vienna. The team will return to campus late Monday night.
"We are extremely grateful to our supporters for allowing us to turn this vision into a reality," Roussell said. "This was a huge endeavor that developed from the effort and kindness from a lot of people that make this a very special program."
