The Bison Host Cornell at Graham Field on Friday
HARRISONBURG, Va. – Bucknell field hockey finished with double the amount of corners and just three less shots on goal than James Madison but couldn't get one past the 17th-ranked Dukes' goalkeeper in a 3-0 loss. The non-conference matchup was played at the JMU Field Hockey Complex.
James Madison controlled the first half, taking a 2-0 lead on goals by Elfi de Rooij and Ongeziwe. The Dukes out-shot the Bison 12-3, including a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal.
But the Bison turned things around in the second half. They fired six shots on goal and 10 overall to three on goal and eight total shots for the Dukes. James Madison goalie Caitlin Nelson made the difference, stopping all seven shots she faced. Megan Guzzardi provided some help with a defensive save.
Chloe Poltonavage and M.C. Evans tallied two shots on goal apiece for Bucknell, which dropped to 0-2 on the season. Katie Mannino, Lexi Quick, Claire Lesher and Kaelyn Long had one shot on goal apiece.
Mali scored twice for James Madison, which improved to 1-1. Her second goal came with just under 10 minutes left in the second half.
Olivia Harris was solid in goal for the Bison, making a career-high eight saves. One of the goals she allowed was the result of a wide-open fastbreak by the Dukes.
Bucknell will host Cornell for its home opener on Friday at 4 p.m. It will be the team's first official game on the recently-replaced turf at Graham Field.
