Women's Water Polo Opens CWPA Play with Pair of Losses to Top-15 Teams

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Bucknell women's water polo team opened CWPA play with a pair of losses to top-15 teams on Saturday at Blodgett Pool.
After dropping a 12-5 decision to No. 12 Hartwick in the morning, the Bison (10-14, 0-2 CWPA) fell to No. 9 Michigan, 14-5, in the afternoon. Over the course of the two games, Marta Considine and Emily Konishi each netted four goals.
Against the Hawks, the second and fourth quarters proved to be the difference in the game. In the second, Hartwick outscored Bucknell, 3-1, to take a 6-3 lead into halftime. The Hawks then scored four of the fourth quarter's five goals to secure their 12-5 victory.
Konishi registered a hat trick while Considine added a pair of goals and three steals. Gigi Rojahn assisted on a pair of goals while Manuela Herrera made five saves.
At the end of the first quarter, the Bison and Wolverines were tied at two apiece. Michigan topped Bucknell for the second time this season by a 14-5 margin by scoring 12 of the next 15 goals. The Wolverines limited the Bison to just one goal in each of the final three frames.
Considine led the Bison with two goals while Konishi, Colleen Barron and Matylda Zaklicki also found the back of the net. Herrera stopped eight shots while Barron paced Bucknell with two steals.
The Bison return to the pool tomorrow when they face Saint Francis at 8 a.m. and No. 13 Indiana at 2:15 p.m.
