EASTON, Pa. – Eve Calabria and Lillie Hunt combined for eight goals, and Jamie DeWitt stopped a career-high 16 shots, but Lafayette topped the Bucknell women's lacrosse team, 15-10, on Wednesday night at Fisher Stadium.
The Leopards (4-6, 1-2 Patriot League) pulled away from the Bison (2-7, 1-2 Patriot League) in the second half, scoring seven of the frame's 11 goals. They held a slim 8-6 advantage at halftime after erasing an early 3-0 Bucknell lead with a 5-0 run and then closing the half on a 3-0 run that turned a 6-5 deficit into their edge.
Calabria set a new career high with six points on four goals and two assists. Her four goals tied her career high, set on March 10 at George Washington. Hunt, who entered the night with two career goals, also recorded four goals, including two in succession near the middle of the first half to give the Bison a 6-5 lead.
DeWitt was strong in the cage, topping her previous career high in saves by three. It was the sixth time this season she reached the double digits in saves.
Bucknell raced out to a 3-0 lead in the game's first three minutes, with Calabria and Mary Margaret Kenney each notching a goal and an assist. But Lafayette responded with a 5-0 run that ran from the 26:53 mark to the 15:43 mark.
The Bison regrouped, netting the next three goals to regain their lead. First, Calabria found the back of the net with 13:36 on the clock; then Hunt struck at the 13:05 and 9:31 marks.
After the Leopards closed out the first half on a 3-0 run, they opened the second half's scoring less than two minutes in to take a 9-6 lead, their largest of the game at the time. From that point on, Bucknell only managed to draw back within two goals.
Sophia Klaber, Bucknell's other goal scorer, also collected a team-best four ground balls and was one of three Bison with two draw controls. Jessie Britton caused a team-high three turnovers.
By forcing Bella Alampi to cough up the ball with 2:34 remaining in regulation, Katherine Doyle cracked Bucknell's top 10 in career caused turnovers. She now has 52 and needs three to move into ninth.
Hannah Davey led Lafayette with four goals while three of her teammates also registered a hat trick. Davey also paced all players with five ground balls and finished second to Kristin Schaen (9) with seven draw controls. In net, Quinn Lacy played the majority of the game and made six saves.
Lafayette outshot Bucknell, 41-19, bolstered by a 22-9 second half. The Leopards also held advantages in ground balls (20-14) and draw controls (20-7) while limiting the Bison to just two free-position attempts over the course of the contest.
Bucknell next welcomes Colgate to Graham Field for a game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
