LEWISBURG, Pa. – Morgan Steinhacker netted a career-high four goals, and Jamie DeWitt stopped 10 shots, but the Bucknell women's lacrosse team fell to Villanova, 17-7, on Wednesday at a rainy Graham Field.
Katie Comerford led a Wildcat team that had 10 players register at least one point with a career-high 10 points, recording six goals and four helpers. She posted six of her points in the first half to help stake Villanova a 10-3 advantage heading into the intermission.
In the game's first five minutes, the Wildcats (1-1) raced out to a 5-0 lead. After Steinhacker netted two of the next three goals to pull the Bison (1-2) within four with 14:20 on the clock, Villanova closed the half on a 4-1 run to build its 10-3 edge.
Early in the second half, Bucknell twice drew within six. The Wildcats ultimately strung together a 6-0 run from the 23:28 mark to the 5:24 mark to build their largest lead of the game.
Steinhacker found the back of the net for the fourth time with three minutes remaining in regulation. With no time left on the clock, Jessie Britton set up Eve Lukowski for a transition strike to bring the final score to 17-7. The assist was the sophomore defender's first career point and came after she hustled to force a turnover with 10 seconds remaining.
Entering the game, Steinhacker owned eight career goals. She became the first Bison to enjoy a multi-point outing in 2018.
DeWitt reached the double digits in saves for the second time this season. Britton filled the stat sheet; along with her assist, she also paced Bucknell with three ground balls and tied Kate Fiore for the team lead with two caused turnovers.
The Wildcats led the Bison in shots, 36-11, bolstered by a 20-4 opening half. They also held a 16-8 advantage in draw controls and forced 21 turnovers compared to Bucknell's 12.
The Bison return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they square off against Wagner in Staten Island, N.Y.
