Bucknell Finished Non-Conference Play at 9-3
AMES, Iowa – Senior Kate Walker scored 15 points while playing in her home state, but Bucknell saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end with an 86-61 loss to Iowa State on Saturday in front of 10,261 fans at Hilton Coliseum.
Iowa State used a huge second quarter to improve to 10-2 on the season. The Cyclones out-scored the Bison 28-6 in the second, including a 21-0 run over the final 4:59. They had just a three-point advantage, 58-55, over the other three quarters.
Bucknell, which finished non-conference play at 9-3, had three players score in double-figures. Joining Walker were junior Ellie Mack with 13 points and freshman Marly Walls with 10 points.
Walls scored all 10 of her points in the third quarter, helping Bucknell match Iowa State 23-23 during that stretch. She also tallied two of her three steals in the quarter.
Early foul trouble proved costly for Bucknell. Senior Kaitlyn Slagus, who finished with eight points and five rebounds, was whistled for her third foul just 2:20 into the second quarter and played only 23 minutes. Sophomore Abby Kapp picked up two fouls in the first three minutes of the game and was on the floor for just 17 minutes.
Poor shooting, especially around the rim, also hurt the Bison. They shot 29 percent (20-70) from the field and connected on two of their 12 attempts from long range. The Bison were successful at the line, hitting 81 percent (17-21) of their free throw attempts. Walker was a perfect 6-for-6 at the line, while Walls made all four of her attempts.
Iowa State had five players score in double-figures, led by Bridget Carleton with 19 points. The two-time unanimous First Team All-Big 12 selection also shared the team lead with eight rebounds. Ines Nezerwa finished with 18 points, while Madison Wise had 12, Alexia Middleton scored 11, and Ashley Joens totaled 10.
The Cyclones entered the game ranked eighth in the nation in RPI. The Cyclones won the Preseason WNIT earlier this year with a win over Auburn in the semifinal round and a win over then-No. 24 Miami in the championship game.
Bucknell had five blocks in the game, including two apiece by Mack and Slagus. Mack led the team with six rebounds, while sophomore Ally Johnson dished out a team-high four assists.
All three of Bucknell's losses this season have come in true road games. The Bison are back at Sojka Pavilion, where they are 4-0 this year, to open Patriot League play against American on Thursday, Jan. 3, at 6 p.m.
