LEWISBURG, Pa. – The No. 16 Bucknell University men's water polo team will head into the MAWPC Championships with some momentum after going 2-0 in the final two regular season games at Kinney Natatorium for the 2018 season.
The Bison picked up a 15-7 win over Navy in the morning before doubling up Johns Hopkins, 14-7 in the afternoon matchup.
The win improves the Bison record to 20-6, the second time in the past three seasons the Bison have reached the 20-win mark in the regular season.
Game One: No. 16 Bucknell 15, Navy 7
The Bison used a 5-0 run to open the game and never looked back to defeat the Mids for the second time this season.
Rade Joksimovic came out strong right out of the gate for the Bison, scoring two of the first three goals in the run. A key ejection drawn by Logan Schofield set up a power play opportunity for the Bison on the third goal, and Schofield also assisted Joksimovic on the play.
The Bison added a sixth goal from Jared Stanley before Navy scored a goal with six seconds left to end the first period with a 6-2 lead.
A low-scoring second period saw the contest enter the halftime break with Bucknell leading 8-3.
Bucknell tacked on five more goals in the third period to effectively seal the contest. Stanley was involved heavily in the Bison scoring throughout the third, assisting Marko Djordjevic on a goal at the 5:57 mark, before assisting Djordjevic once again on a nice pass after chasing down a ball near the side barrier and lofting a long pass that found Djordjevic wide open near the back post.
Stanley and Djordjevic linked up for a third time in the period with 1:38 left after another long pass from Stanley found Djordjevic in open space in front of the Navy cage.
The Bison closed the game in the fourth quarter on a quick counter attack where Joksimovic picked out Djordjevic, before Djordjevic unselfishly squared the ball back across to a waiting Schofield, who converted to give Bucknell an eight-goal advantage, 14-6, that it would hold until the final score, 15-7.
Bucknell had five different goal scorers, with Joksimovic leading the way with six goals and two assists. Djordjevic added four goals and an assist in his final weekend at Kinney Natatorium, while Stanley added two goals and two assists.
Schofield drew nine ejections, one short of his season high of 10 vs. MIT on Sept. 1 Jack Otto saved a season-high 13 shots in the win.
