BRONX, N.Y.—The No. 15 ranked and top seeded Bucknell University men's water polo team advanced to Sunday's MAWPC championship game with a 12-11 win over host Fordham on Saturday afternoon.
The Bison once again came out of the gates firing, taking a 7-2 lead in the second quarter. Bucknell managed to hold off a late Fordham rally to hang on for a one-goal win against the home standing Rams.
It took the Bison three minutes to net the opening goal, as Marko Djordjevic tallied his first goal of the day on an assist from Cooper Dolan. The Bison added three more unanswered goals over the next three minutes, with Logan Schofield and Jared Stanley each finding the back of the cage before Fordham's Samuel Varshisky found a late goal for the home team with six seconds left in the first period.
The Rams tallied another goal at the 5:32 mark of the second period.
The Bison then once again tallied three unanswered goals to seemingly take control of the game, with Matt Blackwell scoring a brace just over a minute apart at the 4:21 and the 3:07 mark before Rade Joksimovic found his first goal of the day with 2:21 left in the first half to give the Bison a 7-2 lead.
The Rams once again found a late goal with 27 seconds left in the half to bring the halftime score to 7-3.
The two teams traded goals to start the third period, with another Djordjevic tally keeping the Rams deficit to four goals, 10-6, with 2:21 left in the third period. However, the Rams scored three of the next four goals to close within two, 11-9, heading into the fourth period.
The fourth quarter began with several turnovers from both teams before Schofield found the back of the cage from a pass by Joksimovic to give the Bison a 12-9 lead on what would prove to be the winning goal. Schofield then stole the ball on the next play to help run time off of the clock.
However, the Rams kept pushing for goals, and they eventually found their tenth goal of the game with 46 seconds left to make the score 12-10. Another goal by the Rams with ten seconds left gave them life at 12-11, but the Bison managed to hold on to advance to the MAWPC Championship game for the second time in the past three years.
Cooper Dolan picked up a season-high five assists in the win. Jack Otto made eight saves in the cage for the Orange and Blue.
