Joksimovic Named Tournament MVP
BRONX, N.Y. – The No. 15 Bucknell University men's water polo team led with eight seconds left to go in the contest, but a furious George Washington rally at the end of regulation and overtime helped the Colonials to a 12-11 win over the Bison in Sunday afternoon's MAWPC Championship game.
The Bison finish their season at 22-7 after the loss.
The Bison and the Colonials were deadlocked early, and that would continue to be the theme of the game as each team couldn't manage to pull away from the other.
GW opened with a two goal lead four minutes into the game, but Cooper Dolan and Jack Lewis each scored on an assist from Marko Djordjevic to tie the game at two with 2:19 left in the first period.
The Bison added another goal from Lewis in the first period to take a 3-2 lead after one.
In the second period, the Bison tried to pull away, taking a two-goal advantage after a goal from Cooper Dolan gave Bucknell a 4-2 edge with 6:15 to go in the half.
However, the Colonials would score the next three goals over the remainder of the period to take a 5-4 lead heading into halftime.
In the third, the Colonials took another two-goal lead, but Bucknell rallied back with a penalty shot goal from Joksimovic and a goal from Logan Schofield to tie the game at six with 2:49 left. GW tallied another goal in the period to take a 7-6 lead heading into the final quarter.
Jared Stanley quickly equalized for the Bison at the 7:34 mark of the fourth to tie the game at seven.
Bucknell and George Washington then traded goals at the 3:55 mark and 3:18 mark to once again tie the game at eight.
The game would remain tied until eight seconds left on the clock, when Rade Joksimovic scored what seemed to be the game-winning goal with just eight seconds left after a timeout by George Washington.
However, the Colonials managed a late goal with just one second left to send the game into overtime.
GW would score the next two goals in overtime to take an 11-9 lead. The Bison pulled two goals back over the final minute, but the Colonials added their twelfth goal of the game with 36 seconds left to take a 12-11 win.
Joksimovic and Lewis each finished with three goals, while Jack Otto shattered his previous career high of 13 saves with a 19-save performance in the cage for the Orange and Blue.
