The Bison Will Play at No. 18 Syracuse on Sunday
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell led after one quarter, but Drexel used a 19-point run in the second half to pull away as the Bison fell 64-42 to the Dragons in a non-conference women's basketball game Thursday night at The Daskalakis Athletic Center.
Bucknell, which dropped to 2-1 overall, was coming off a win over Quinnipiac in which it used a 22-0 run to get the win. Drexel improved to 2-1, including a win over Saint Joseph's and a loss to Quinnipiac.
Senior Kate Walker led the Bison with eight points, while senior Kaitlyn Slagus contributed seven points and eight rebounds. Junior Ellie Mack had six points, six rebounds, and a career-high five assists, and freshman Taylor O'Brien chipped in with a career-high seven points.
Mack assisted on four of Bucknell's six field goals in the first quarter as the Bison took a 14-13 lead. Walker was 3-for-4 from the field and scored six of her eight points in the quarter. The team shot 6-of-13 from the field.
The offense stalled for Bucknell in the second quarter. The Bison scored just four points, allowing Drexel to take a 25-18 lead at the break.
"It was a really disappointing night," Bucknell head coach Aaron Roussell said. "I thought we moved the ball well in the first quarter and got good shots, but not much went right after that."
Drexel's big run started with 3:14 left in the third quarter and continued for 2:29 of the fourth when Ana Ferariu put the Dragons up 57-27 with a short jumper. Slagus scored on the ensuing possession to end the run.
"It didn't get away from us until the end of the third quarter, and I kept thinking we were going to pull ourselves out of it and be ok," Roussell said. "Unfortunately, things got worse."
Fouls were a problem for Bucknell as it committed 24 to Drexel's eight. The Bison also turned the ball over 19 times to the Dragons' seven, and were out-rebounded 40-36. The Dragons turned 17 offensive boards into 15 points and scored 23 points off turnovers.
Bailey Greenberg paced Drexel with 20 points and five rebounds. Niki Metzel joined her in double-figures with 11 points and added eight boards and three assists.
"We really got beat up in every phase of the game – at the free throw line, on the boards, on both ends of the floor," Roussell said. "Hopefully we are able to pull some good lessons from this game and it makes us better down the road."
Another tough road matchup awaits Bucknell. The Bison will travel to play No. 18 Syracuse on Sunday at 2 p.m. It will be the first ever meeting between the two teams.
