First-year defender scored twice in Saturday's win at Army
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell freshman Holly Burns bagged a brace in the team's 3-1 away victory over Army West Point on Saturday night, and on Monday the Bison defender was recognized with Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors.
Burns has started every game for the Bison this season, suiting up as a midfielder until the most recent five-game stretch, when she moved to the back line due to an injury to classmate Claire Mensi. In those five games with Burns pairing with senior co-captain Maddie Dano at center back, the Bison are 4-1 with just three goals allowed.
That included last week's 1-0 away loss against a high-powered Princeton team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals a year ago. The Bison conceded only an early goal in that one, and then on Saturday at Army, Burns came forward and had a hand in each of the team's three goals off corner kicks in the win over the Black Knights.
In the 13th minute, Burns headed in Dano's corner kick delivery for her first collegiate goal. After Army tied the game early in the second half, the Bison regained the lead 14 minutes later. Dano again targeted Burns on the corner kick, and with Burns challenging at the top of the 6-yard box, the Army goalkeeper tried to jump over her back but ended up punching the ball into her own net.
In the 81st minute, Burns gave the Bison a big insurance goal on yet another corner. Dano's service was headed back across goal by Carly Baggott, and Burns volleyed it home for a 3-1 lead.
The victory moved the Bison to 4-1 in Patriot League play (6-7-1 overall). Bucknell is tied for third place alongside Navy, with Boston University and Colgate sharing the lead at 4-0-1. The Bison have a big game coming up this Saturday at home against Colgate.
