The Bison Finish 1-1 on the Weekend
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell took the first set against the team with the best overall record in the conference, but Lehigh bounced back to get the 3-1 win in Patriot League volleyball action Sunday at Davis Gym.
The Bison, who were coming off a 3-1 win over Lafayette the previous day, saw their record dip to 6-11 overall and 1-5 in the Patriot League. The Mountain Hawks improved to 16-2 overall and 5-1 in the conference.
A balanced attack gave Bucknell a chance as it had five players with at least six kills, led by freshman Jennie Burke with 10 on .318 hitting. Senior Blake Buchholz tallied nine kills, junior Mimi Richards had eight, and Delanie Lewis and Bridgette Holland contributed six apiece.
Bucknell led the first set 23-22 and moved it to set point on a service error. Lehigh stayed alive and pulled within one, but the Bison took the 1-0 lead after clinching the set on a kill by Holland.
Service errors were a problem for the Mountain Hawks. They finished with 16 in the match, including seven in the opening set.
Lehigh took the next two sets, but Bucknell was battling in the fourth with the hope of tying the match. A kill by Sophie Bullard gave the Bison a 20-19 lead before the Mountain Hawks scored the next two points to go up 21-20. On the next point, the Bison were called for a violation on a close call at the net that resulted in a two-point lead for the Mountain Hawks, who would go on to score the next three points to clinch the match.
Sabrina Lancaster led Lehigh with 16 kills. Julia Pressley and Hannah Wright added 13 and 11, respectively.
The Bison will be on the road for their next four matches, starting at Loyola on Saturday at 5 p.m.
