LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell and Lehigh were seemingly headed to penalty kicks to decide which team would advance to the Patriot League Women's Soccer Tournament semifinals, but Lehigh forward Kayla Arestivo stunned the Bison and their home crowd with a goal with just two seconds remaining in the second overtime period, giving the Mountain Hawks a 2-1 victory Tuesday night at Emmitt Field.
Fifth-seeded Lehigh moves on to play No. 2 Colgate in a semifinal contest on Friday in Boston. Top-seeded Boston University will host No. 6 Army West Point in the other semifinal after the Black Knights upset Navy 1-0 in double overtime on Tuesday night.
Bucknell, the two-time defending Patriot League champion, ends its season with a 7-11-1 record. Despite losing eight starters from last year's title-winning team, the Bison still managed to finish in fourth place in the 10-team league with a 5-4 mark.
The Bison got out to a quick start in this one, scoring on their first shot of the night in the 19th minute. After Bri Kropinack's initial shot was saved by Sam Miller, Gabby Bair tapped in the rebound at the left post for her second goal of the season.
Lehigh tied it just before halftime when Ally Friedman floated a high ball from outside the box on the left side over the head of Theresa Adu-Attobrah and into the top right corner.
Both goalkeepers played big roles, with Adu-Attobrah finishing with nine saves and Miller seven. The Lehigh netminder made two stops on Bucknell free kicks from dangerous spots in the second half, while Adu-Attobrah was also well-positioned for a number of saves on shots from distance.
Bucknell senior Camille Andrews, who got the call at right back for her second career start, kept it a 1-1 game in the 84th minute when she cleared Mackenzie Anton's shot off the line while stationed on the post in a corner-kick scrum.
Riley Coopersmith and Bair tested Miller with long-range shots in the first overtime period, but Lehigh was the aggressor in the second 10-minute extra period.
Sidonie Warnecker nearly ended it in the 105th minute when she found space along the left flank, but her rising shot skimmed off the crossbar. Adu-Attobrah made a save on Sabrina Mertz with about 45 seconds to go, and the match seemed destined for penalties when Libby Andrews collected the ball at midfield for Lehigh with just 10 seconds left.
But Andrews found Warnecker, who turned and played in Arestivo along the left side of the box. Lehigh's All-Patriot League forward broke free and slotted a shot just inside the far post at the 109:58 mark. It was Arestivo's eighth shot attempt of the night and her sixth on frame.
Lehigh finished with a 21-9 shot advantage and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Both of Bucknell's corners came in overtime, the first of which bounced dangerously deep in the Lehigh area.
It was the final career appearance for Bucknell's seven seniors: Andrews, Carly Baggott, Coopersmith, Maddie Dano, Casey Gray, Melissa MacPherson and Shelby Roberts. This class will graduate with two league titles and the second-most wins in team history (46).
