BOSTON, Mass. – The Bucknell University men's soccer team led throughout the first half of play, but a goal in the second half and first overtime period helped Boston University come from behind for the Terrier's first ever victory in the series between the two teams in a 2-1 win.
Bucknell drops to 6-7-3 this season with the loss.
The Bison had a dangerous chance 10 minutes in when a nice pass from Alex Clarke put Michael Pavick in behind. Pavick took several touches before firing a hard shot from the right side of the 18 that forced Boston U goalkeeper Mike Bernardi into a diving save to his right.
Neither team managed to create much over the next 20 minutes, until an errant pass from Bernardi fell to the feet of Stefan Gollisz about 25 yards out. Gollisz went to chip Bernardi, but his shot was just high of the frame.
Clarke was involved again in the 39th minute after winning a bouncing ball about 30 yards out before streaking down the right side of the field past several Boston U defenders. Clarke then picked his spot at the far post from the right side of the penalty area and finished with a low shot across his body to give Bucknell a 1-0 lead that it would hold heading into the halftime break.
The Bison looked to double their lead quickly after the start of play in the 53rd minute when Cody Wax hit a hard struck shot that rattled off of the post.
In the 61st, Michael Pavick turned his man and fired a low shot from the right side of the box that forced a kick save from Bernardi as the Bison continued to look to add an insurance goal.
The Bison back line held the Terriers without a shot on goal until the 64th minute when a low shot inside a crowded penalty area forced a comfortable save from Ryan Ott.
The Terriers equalized in the 69th minute after a driven free kick was redirected at the back post by Kari Petursson and tapped in by David Riccio.
Matt Thorsheim forced yet another impressive save from Bernardi after skipping past several defenders before firing a shot with the outside of his foot that was kicked away in the 73rd minute. Bernie Wright tested Bernardi just seconds later with a hard shot from the left side that the netminder also managed to save.
The Terriers nearly took the lead on an open header in the 81st minute from Petursson, but the chance flashed just wide of the net.
The two teams couldn't break the deadlock in regulation, and headed to overtime for the eighth time in the eight matchups all-time between the two teams.
Michael Pavick found a bit of space at the top of the 18 and struck a shot that was right at Bernardi for the Bison's first chance of extra time after three minutes.
It was the Terriers however who took advantage of a curling cross just six minutes into the first overtime period that was headed in by Adam Wright to give Boston U. the win.
"We certainly didn't help ourselves today, now we have to wait and see out the weekend's results around the league." Head Coach Brendan Nash said. "You have to give Boston credit, they kept fighting when they were down. We had chances to make it 2-0 and didn't. Boston U didn't quit and got themselves back into the game."
Each team had four shots on the day, with Boston U. holding a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Bison return to action on Saturday for the final regular-season matchup and Senior Day at home vs. Navy. Patriot League Tournament berths will be at stake. At the conclusion of weekend play the Bison sit in sole possession of the sixth and final playoff spot on 10 points, but Navy and Army West Point lurk just a single point behind.
