CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Bucknell's Gerrit Van Itallie captured Patriot League Special Teams Player of the Week accolades, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Van Itallie, who was also selected as the Bison Athlete of the Week, was recognized after blocking two punts at Monmouth. The sophomore blocked his first punt in the end zone, and recovered the ball for a touchdown, to cut the Hawks' edge to 16-13 with 7:22 left to play in the third quarter.
Also a force on defense, Van Itallie registered a career-best eight tackles, including three for a loss of 14 yards. He posted his first career sack and forced fumble, which came at the Bucknell 35 with Monmouth looking to extend its lead from 9-6 entering halftime.
These are Van Itallie's first weekly honors. He is the second Bison to earn a Patriot League weekly award this season, joining two-time Rookie of the Week Jared Cooper. The last Bison to be tabbed as the Patriot League Special Teams Player of the Week was John Burdick; the kicker was honored on Sept. 25 and Oct. 16 during the 2017 campaign.
Van Itallie is the second football player to garner Bison Athlete of the Week laurels this school year. Joe Lauro was previously honored on Oct. 1 for his key role in Bucknell's 19-16 victory at Holy Cross.Â
