Volleyball Tallies 14 Blocks in Five-Set Loss at Army West Point

Bridgette Holland Finished with 10 Kills and Seven Total Blocks
WEST POINT, N.Y – Bucknell and Army West Point battled for five sets and then a little extra before the Black Knights pulled out a 3-2 (25-17, 18-25, 18-25, 25-21, 17-15) win over the Bison in a Patriot League volleyball match Sunday at Gillis Field House.
Bucknell, which made the trip to West Point after playing in Baltimore on Saturday evening, dropped to 6-13 overall and 1-7 in the Patriot League. Army improved to 8-13 overall and 3-5 in the conference.
Army staved off defeat on three match-point chances for Bucknell. The Bison took a 14-12 lead only to have the Black Knights score two straight to tie it up. A kill by Mimi Richards put the Bison up 15-14, but the Black Knights scored the final three points, including a kill by Lisa Sullivan to clinch the match.
After a 25-17 loss in the first set, Bucknell won the next two by identical 25-18 scores. Senior Blake Buchholz led the effort in set two with three kills, three digs, and two block assists. The third set was a true team effort with Buchholz, junior Bridgette Holland, freshman Jennie Burke, and junior Sophie Bullard all contributing two kills. Buchholz and Holland added two total blocks apiece in the set.
Bucknell put together a solid defensive effort on the day with five players finishing with at least nine digs and the team totaling 14 blocks. Sophomore Delanie Lewis recorded a team-high 14 digs and was followed by Bullard (12), sophomore Alexa Bonanno (11), junior Brooke Stark (11), and Buchholz (9). Bullard completed a double-double with a team-high 12 kills.
Holland sparked the big day in terms of blocks, registering two solo and five block assists, while also adding 10 kills. Richards was also impressive with one solo and five block assists in addition to her 10 kills. Also contributing to the effort were Buchholz (1 solo, 4 block assists), Burke (3 block assists), and Bullard (3 block assists).
Army West Point had four players finish with double-digit kills, led by Allie Strong and Courtney Horace with 14 apiece, but were held to .168 hitting as a team.
The Bison are back on the road for their next two league contests, starting with a match at Navy on Saturday at 4 p.m. They play at American at 2 p.m. the following day.
