LEWISBURG, Pa. – Joe Lauro was voted as the Bison Athlete of the Week after leading the Bucknell football team to a 19-16 victory at Holy Cross.
The senior safety came up big for the Bison during the Crusaders' final drive of the game, breaking up two passes. He sealed the victory on a Holy Cross 4th and 10 by leveling wide receiver Richie DeNicola at midfield, knocking the ball away in the process.
Lauro also tied Sam Chitty for the game high with 11 tackles (seven solo). He now leads the team with 46 tackles (29 solo), bolstered by making at least eight in each of the first five games. His average of 9.2 tackles per game stands second in the Patriot League and tied for 38th in the FCS.
Lauro will enter this weekend's game with 195 tackles (125 solo) in 32 career games. He's on track to become the second Bison on the 2018 roster to reach the 200-tackle threshold, joining fellow captain Bryan Marine.
Lauro is the first football player to capture Bison Athlete of the Week accolades this season. In 2017, Colin Jonov (Sept. 3, Oct. 22), Ben Richard (Sept. 24) and Simeon Page (Nov. 19) earned this distinction. This is also Lauro's first career weekly award.
Lauro and the Bison return to Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 12 p.m. to face No. 20/21 Colgate, one of the four unbeaten teams remaining in the FCS.
