BURLINGTON, Vt. – Zack Rockmore's penalty kick in the 83rd minute propelled the Bucknell men's soccer team to its first victory of the season with a 2-1 win over Sacred Heart Sunday at Virtue Field at the Peter Baldwin Memorial Classic hosted by Vermont.
The Bison earned the penalty kick opportunity following a foul in the back to Patrick Mahoney. Rockmore sent the shot to the left side of the netting, securing Bucknell's first win in 2016.
Bucknell struck first in the 30th minute of action. Andrew Leischner gained possession, sending a thru ball to Nick King. King then one-touched the ball back to a streaking Leischner, who took the shot from the top of the 30-yard box that found the back of the net for his first goal of the season.
Sacred Heart got on the board in the 57th minute off an unassisted score from Matt Manzo. After taking a few dribbles, Manzo sent a left-footed blast to the far post for the equalizer. The Pioneers nearly tied it up again in the final moments of regulation when Sam MacPherson took a shot off a corner kick that bounced off the crossbar with time expiring.
“At halftime, we talked about getting that second half goal,” said head coach Brendan Nash. “We were taking care of everything statistically. We had to scrape to get our second goal after they tied it up 1-1. It was pretty ugly but we grinded it out.”
Bucknell outshot the Pioneers 17-9 in the game, including an 11-1 margin in the first half. Goalkeeper Tyler Marchiano made two saves in the contest to earn his first career victory between the pipes.
Tyler Peterson, Leischner and Rockmore were each named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Bison return to action Sept. 9 when the team travels to Pittsburgh to compete at the Duquesne Invitational. Bucknell will take on Canisius, followed by Wofford on Sept. 11.
