VESTAL, N.Y. – Ben Ovetsky found the back of the net in the first half to lift Binghamton to a 1-0 victory over Bucknell in a non-league men's soccer game on Tuesday night at Bearcats Sports Complex. The Bison fall to 2-6-2 overall following their break from Patriot League play.
Bucknell finished with a 9-5 shot advantage and generated three corner kicks, but were unable to solve Chris Shutler (four saves) and the Bearcats' defense.
Sebastiaan Blickman finished with a team-high two shots, nearly scoring in the 20th minute but the ball sailed high.
Binghamton, coming off a 3-0 win over Buffalo, scored the game's lone goal in the 33rd minute. Nikkos Psarras sent a through ball to Ovetsky, who was able to get the ball around a charging Emmett Witmer for the finish.
The Bucknell defense was solid for most of the evening, limiting the Bearcats to just two shots in the second half and without an attempt in the final 22:48. Senior tri-captain Peter Krebs was solid for the Bison off the bench, playing in a season-high 54 minutes.
“Binghamton is a tough opponent and it was a typical 1-0 game,” said head coach Brendan Nash. "They put away one of their few chances and we didn't with ours. Now we need to focus on Holy Cross.”
The Bearcats (5-2-3) won their second straight game, as the team opens America East action Saturday at UMass Lowell.
Bucknell resumes league play Saturday with a contest at Holy Cross. Game time is set for 1 p.m. and the contest will broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
