MERION STATION, Pa. – Junior Emily Finn matched a career high with eight saves, but the Bucknell field hockey team dropped a 4-0 decision on the road to Saint Joseph's in a non-conference game Friday. The Bison fell to 1-1 overall, while the Hawks improved to 2-1.
Both Bucknell and Saint Joseph's were coming off wins over teams that were receiving votes in the national poll. The Bison opened the season with a 2-0 victory over Rutgers, while the Hawks upended Temple 2-1 in their second game of the year.
The teams traded shots on goal to start the game, including the first opportunity just 41 seconds in by Bucknell sophomore Nicole Rupnik. The Hawks Victoria Kammerinke stopped that shot and went on to finish with five saves to record the shutout.
Finn was impressive early on, stopping the first five shots she faced. Saint Joseph's finally broke through with a goal by sophomore Anna Willocks in the 30th minute. The Hawks then went up 2-0 on a goal by Jackalyn Pauling at the 42:30 mark of the first half.
The Hawks scored one minute into the second half with a goal by Kayla Walker, and Willocks would tack on her second score of the game and fourth of the season in the 57th minute.
Willocks and Kammerinke were both coming off weekly awards from the Atlantic 10. Willocks was named the league's Player of the Week, while Kammerinke was tabbed as the Goalie of the Week.
Rupnik finished with three of the Bison's five shots on goal. Sophomore Lexi Quick and freshman Brittany Willwerth had one apiece.
Bucknell dropped to 4-2 in the all-time series with Saint Joseph's. The Bison had beaten the Hawks in each of the past two seasons, combining for eight goals in the two victories.
The Bison will have Saturday off before traveling to play No. 15 Princeton on Sunday. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Bedford Field.
