LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Mike Lansing first visited Vejle, Denmark in 2013 -- the spring of his freshman year at Bucknell -- accompanying classmate Chris Thorsheim overseas to train with the local professional soccer club. More than three years later, with his Bucknell degree in hand, Lansing has returned to Vejle to start his own pro career.
A 6'4" goalkeeper, Lansing recently signed with Vejle Boldklub of Denmark's first division (second-highest level of Danish soccer). Vejle opened its 2016-17 season last weekend with a 1-1 draw against Fremad Amager.
Lansing played in 57 games in goal for the Bison over the last four years, posting a career .831 save percentage and 0.90 goals-against average. His 16 shutouts rank sixth on Bucknell's career list, and his 236 saves are eighth-most in team history. Lansing led the Patriot League in save percentage (.843) and goals-against average (0.86) as a freshman, when he started 18 games. A year later he earned Second Team All-Patriot League honors after posting a 10-6-1 record with eight shutouts while ranking 10th nationally with a 0.75 GAA.
Lansing will not be the only Bucknell grad playing soccer in Denmark this season. Former Bison midfielder Conor O'Brien '10 is entering his sixth professional season, five of them coming in Denmark along with one in Austria. O'Brien is back with AC Horsens of the Danish Superliga this season. O'Brien was a key contribuor for Horsens last year when the club earned promotion to the highest division of Danish soccer.
Another recent Bucknell soccer alum, Mayowa Alli '14, has spent the last two seasons with Ki Klaksvik in the Faroe Islands. Thorsheim spent time with the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer and on trial with Vejle in Denmark over the last several months.
