LEWISBURG, Pa. – Nick Bybel was named the winner of the Christy Mathewson Award at Bucknell's annual Senior Athletics Awards Banquet on Sunday night.
The Christy Mathewson Award is presented to the most outstanding athlete in the senior class. Bybel set a new standard for Patriot League men's tennis during his four years at Bucknell, becoming the first player from the league whose accomplishments were recognized on a national level. He debuted in the national rankings at 114th during his junior season and climbed to 95th during his senior year.
Bybel became the first Bucknell player to be named the Patriot League Men's Tennis Player of the Year when he received the award as a sophomore, and then earned the award again as a junior. He is a three-time First Team All-Patriot League selection and certain to add a fourth honor at the conclusion of his senior season, Bybel finished his career with 111 career singles victories, 35 more than anyone else in Bucknell history. He also ranks first in program history with 189 combined singles and doubles victories.
