Eleven Student-Athletes Honored at President's Senior Awards Ceremony

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Eleven Bison senior student-athletes combined to receive 18 awards at the President's Senior Awards Ceremony, held last Saturday at the Weis Center as part of Commencement Weekend festivities. Headlining the list was Nora Adams of the cross country and track and field teams, who received four awards, including the top prize: the President's Award for Distinguished Academic Achievement, in recognition of her perfect 4.0 grade-point average over four years at Bucknell.
A double major in linguistics and psychology, Adams was also awarded the Bucknell Prize for Women, the Oliver J. Decker Prize, and the Maria Leonard Senior Book Award. This was the second year in a row that a student-athlete earned the President's Award for Distinguished Academic Achievement, as rower Margo Boyd claimed the prestigious honor in 2015.
Football's Matt DelMauro and field hockey's Abby Watson were re-presented the Alvin F. Jackson Jr. '59 Memorial Scholar-Athlete Award, which they had initially received on May 1 at the 55th Annual Department of Athletics & Recreation Senior Recognition Dinner. DelMauro also received the John R. Crossgrove Prize for his outstanding work as an accounting and financial management major, while Watson added the Jai B. Kim Prize in Civil and Environmental Engineering.
Other student-athletes receiving awards were Alison Billas (cross country/track and field), Meghan Carroll (cross country/track and field), Clayton Hoffmaster (football), Jesse Klug (soccer), Mariah Midyette (softball), Eric Monfort (lacrosse), Peter Murray (cross country/track and field) and Vikram Shenoy (football). Billas and Shenoy earned two awards apiece.
A total of 148 student-athletes were among the 867 graduates receiving their degrees at Sunday's 166th Commencement.
Here are the prizes and awards won this year by student-athletes:
Nora Adams (Cross Country/Track & Field)
The Bucknell Prize for Women -- a prize established by William Bucknell for that woman of the graduating class who has the highest four-year average.
Oliver J. Decker Prize -- established by Oliver J. Decker, LL.D., Class of 1889, and consists of a prize for that member of the graduating class not in an engineering department who has attained the highest average, all courses having been taken at Bucknell University; and a prize for that member of the graduating class from the College of Engineering who has attained the highest average, all courses having been taken at Bucknell University.
Maria Leonard Senior Book Award -- given to the graduating senior members of Alpha Lambda Delta with the highest GPA in their class.
President's Award for Distinguished Academic Achievement -- awarded annually to those students who demonstrate the highest level of academic achievement by attaining a cumulative GPA of 4.00 on a scale of 4.00.
Allison Billas (Cross Country/Track & Field)
Bucknell Prize in Animal Behavior -- awarded to a senior demonstrating outstanding performance in animal behavior.
Harold W. Miller Prize -- established by the University Honors Council through contributions from friends and alumni to honor the memory of Professor Miller, who founded the Honors Program at Bucknell, and to encourage excellence in honors work.
Meghan Carroll (Cross Country/Track & Field)
Julia Fonville Smithson Memorial Prize for Poetry -- one for poetry, one for nonfiction, and one for fiction, are to be awarded annually for excellence in undergraduate writing, to students whose dedication to the sharing and the making of literature carries into the future the spirit of Julia Smithson.
Matt DelMauro (Football)
Alvin F. Jackson Jr. '59 Memorial Scholar-Athlete Award -- honors the memory of an alumnus and father of a member of the Class of 1989, and is given for excellence in athletics and academics, leadership, loyalty, and courage.
John R. Crossgrove Prize -- awarded to a senior majoring in business or economics who combines scholastic achievement in the business curriculum with exceptional leadership qualities in the campus community.
Clayton Hoffmaster (Football)
Pennsylvania Institute of CPA Award -- awarded to a senior demonstrating outstanding performance in accounting.
Jesse Klug (Soccer)
University Prize for Men -- given to the man of the graduating class who, in the judgment of the president of the University, the vice president for academic affairs, and the dean of student life, or of such committees as they may appoint, most embodies the highest qualities of cultured Christian manhood and the promise of a high degree of usefulness to society. No person shall be barred from consideration for this prize because of religious faith or because of race or color.
Mariah Midyette (Softball)
J. William Moore Prize -- awarded to the senior who most completely exemplifies the original goal of a historic Bucknell education. First and foremost, they demonstrated in their life, in a significant way, traditional values, including courage, honesty, and compassion for others. They also have achieved high academic success in coursework in education.
Eric Monfort (Lacrosse)
Richard P. Nickelsen Prize -- awarded to a senior demonstrating outstanding performance in geology.
Peter Murray (Cross Country/Track & Field)
Walter M. and Florence K. Davis Prize -- established in 2008 by Walter M. Davis, Class of 1947, and Florence K. Davis, Class of 1948. The prize shall be awarded to an outstanding senior graduating in religious studies.
Vikram Shenoy (Football)
Harold W. Miller Prize -- established by the University Honors Council through contributions from friends and alumni to honor the memory of Professor Miller, who founded the Honors Program at Bucknell, and to encourage excellence in honors work.
Meerwarth Prize for Anthropology in Action -- awarded to a senior demonstrating outstanding performance in anthropology.
Abby Watson (Field Hockey)
