LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell senior Amanda Fazio was announced as the Patriot League Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Wednesday. It is the second major academic award in the past week for Fazio, who was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 2 Team on Thursday. Joining her on the 2016 Academic All-Patriot League Team was senior Mariah Midyette.
Fazio is Bucknell's second softball player to win the Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award in the past three seasons, as Cydnee Sanders received the honor in 2014. She is the eighth player in program history to win the award and the third player from the program to earn All-Academic honors three times.
An environmental studies major with a 3.72 GPA, Fazio has made the Dean's List every semester during her time at Bucknell. She is a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Society and made the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll every season. Some of her recent off-the-field accomplishments include an award-winning research project studying international climate change, as well as being one of three student-athletes that coordinated a community dinner focusing on diversity and inclusion on campus and in the community.
Fazio was honored for her softball accomplishments Monday as she was voted First Team All-Patriot League as a pitcher. She finished the regular season as the Patriot League leader in ERA at 1.74 and in strikeouts with 136. She also excelled at the plate, batting .358 with 31 runs and 23 stolen bases.
Midyette landed a spot on the Academic All-Patriot League Team for the first time in her career thanks to a great year in the classroom and on the field. She posted a 3.91 GPA during the fall semester while majoring in early childhood education. She is set to make the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll for the second consecutive season.
Midyette is batting .316 with four doubles, one triple, one home run and 13 RBIs. She enters the postseason with at least one hit in 20 of the past 24 games.
Bucknell has had 15 Academic All-Patriot League selections since the award debuted in 2011. The Bison have had multiple honorees all six seasons.
